ALERT was invited to attend the 2008 Rancho Cucamonga Fire Open House. Many members were present to inform the public about ALERT activities.
On October 24th, 2003 the Alta Loma Riding Club's Emergency Response Team was activated by the Rancho Cucamonga Fire Department to evacuate horses in the Etiwanda, Rancho Cucamonga, and Alta Loma areas. Luckily the ERT had been trained for just such a rescue, all be it we had no idea we would ever be involved in such a large evacuation. Over 24 trucks and trailers were quickly brought into action. And our supplies purchased months ago for just such an evacuation were given to each truck and trailer team. Our main EVAC site, Heritage Park, soon became full and we had to look elsewhere to house our horses. Lucky for us the City of Norco opened up its heart and allowed the ALRC's ERT to evacuate a total of 185 horses to Inga
ll's Park in Norco. The city, organizations and people of Norco came to our help in a way I have never thought possible of any city. Hay, feed, stalls, buckets, volunteers and everything you could possibly think of came to Ingall's to help us in our time of need. A great big THANK YOU goes to the people, organizations and city of Norco.
All in all we transported over 350 horses to Ingall's Park and to other private homes as per the owners of the horses. Each horse was marked with a grease pen, information was taken about the horse and its owner and a Polaroid was taken of the horse as well. All per our EVAC manual written by Bob Olari many months ago. By Monday the 27th of October the all clear was given to our city and we started to return the horses to their rightful owners. By Tuesday the 28th every horse was back home. During the entire evacuation there was no human injuries and only two horses sustained minor injuries.
Another great big THANK YOU to the city and fire department of Rancho Cucamonga. Both agencies along with the ALRC worked together to implement our Evacuation Plan well in advance of any real emergency.
